We gave them some space to tell us about themselves, their process, and what inspires them. This is what they said:
Cris del Carmen (she/they pronouns) is a graduate from Cal State San Bernardino with a BFA in Studio Arts and a minor in Design Arts. Cris is inspired by her Mexican and Bolivian heritage, and is influenced by traditional Italian works. She specializes in oil and digital portraiture, as she enjoys capturing the human essence in all of its beauty and roughness. Cris considers her style to be versatile and flexible considering her years as a classically trained painter and a stylized digital artist. Currently, Cris wants to strengthen their TTRPG character portraits to bring people's characters to life.
My zine "a work in progress" is a collection of watercolor bodies with written expressions given to me by my friends. I asked them how they felt about their bodies; it didn't matter whether it was negative, positive, or neutral because their feelings were valid. I decided to use cropped close up of bodies because I thought it would be easier for the reader to see themselves in the paintings. I painted on a 9x12 watercolor pad and avoided using skin tone colors, as if to reflect each body as uniquely colorful and different.
